Come join us as we pray for Orkney from (at least) 3 different hilltops, simultaneously, on 27th September. We will sing, declare and pray together for 30 mins from the hilltop summits from 3pm! We have chosen 3 hills that will mean we will be able to see over all of the islands, from the North Isles to the South Isles (there may be others added to the list that you can check here). The three hilltops also have different levels of difficulty.
The three hilltops are:
- Wideford Hill, Kirkwall. You can drive most of the way to the summit. Suitable for all abilities.
- Costa Hill, Costa, Evie. Limited parking. 30 mins walk up a farm track with a steady incline. Suitable for most folks of average fitness. The leaders will be leaving the parking area at 2:15pm.
- Ward Hill, Orphir. 45-60 mins climb up a path with a steady incline and a steep final climb. Walking shoes suggested. Suitable for hill walkers with above average fitness. Allow extra time if you're not sure. The leaders will be leaving the parking area at 2pm.
We will set off in time to get to the top of all 3 hills for a 3pm PROMPT start, so if you'd like to join us, please read the details below, work out which you can manage, calculate when you need to set off (giving a bit of leeway) and then get yourself up the hill! Why not find someone to take with you? Parking for all the hills is limited, so please car share where you can.
More details of the three walks below
Wideford Hill is a short drive from Kirkwall out the Old Finstown Road. Parking is limited, so please car share if you can. There are various parking spaces and laybys up the hill, so please park sensibly and take care not to block the road. Once parked, walk to the viewpoint and look for someone with a guitar.
The track that takes you to the top of Costa Hill is marked as part of the St. Magnus Way. To reach it, drive through Evie and keep going until you reach Swannay loch. As the road turns left around the loch, you can park on a grassy layby on the left, or by the small jetty or small field. Please park carefully and leave as much space for others as you can. The start of the track up the hill is about a 10 minute walk back along the road, with a kissing gate marked with the St Magnus way logo at the start.
You can find the start of the walk on google maps at the following link:
For this hilltop, be ready for a steep climb. We have arranged parking at the Guide house "Loutitt's cottage". To reach it, drive to Orphir, then head west (away from Kirkwall). After about 600m (200m after the end of the 30mph zone), turn right up the road that has 2 white houses. Further up the track there is a cottage on the right, where we are allowed to park on the grass.
The walk continues up the track until it the track runs out, at which point just head uphill towards the pole at the top.
